Sarpsborg 08 FF suffered a 1–2 home defeat to Sandefjord Fotball in Round 18 of the Eliteserien on Sunday 16 August, a frustrating result for the home faithful who had waited since late July for football to return to Sarpsborg Stadion.
Despite the setback, the result has done little to dampen spirits around the ground. The match was only the opening act of the most intensive home programme the stadium has seen all season.
A Cup Derby to Lift the Stands
Attention at Sarpsborg Stadion now turns swiftly to the Norwegian Football Cup, where Sarpsborg 08 FF are set to host local rivals Sparta Sarpsborg in a first-round tie pencilled in for 22–23 August.
A city derby in cup football is among the most charged occasions the stadium hosts all year, and supporters are expected to pack the ground's 7,500-capacity stands for what promises to be a fierce and atmospheric evening.
With the league defeat fresh in the memory, the cup derby represents the perfect opportunity for Sarpsborg 08 to bounce back in front of their own fans.
Girls' Football Festival Adds Community Colour
Alongside the cup derby, Sarpsborg Stadion will host a Girls' Football Festival on Sunday 23 August, organised in partnership with Allidrettsdagen and Sarpsborg Idrettsråd.
The event is a community celebration of the women's and girls' game in the city, and adds a vibrant off-pitch dimension to what is shaping up as the busiest and most significant fortnight of the year at the stadium.
Rounding off the three-week home stretch will be an Eliteserien clash against Vålerenga on 7 September, giving supporters at Sarpsborg Stadion plenty to look forward to despite Sunday's disappointment.
