Mmaee double and Karlsbakk winner see off Vålerenga in cup
Sarpsborg 08 beat Vålerenga 3-2 at Sarpsborg Stadion on Wednesday evening in the third round of the Norwegian Cup. Camil Mmaee scored twice and Daniel Seland Karlsbakk netted the winner after Dennis Gjengaar's double had levelled the tie. It was a second straight home win for the club, and it came only days after the victory over Aalesund.
Mmaee strikes twice
Camil Mmaee set Sarpsborg 08 on their way in the 11th minute. Anders Hiim supplied the assist, and the home side led 1-0 at the break.
Mmaee struck again four minutes after the restart. This time Noa Williams was the provider, and the 2-0 lead gave the home crowd plenty to cheer in the Norwegian Cup third round.
Gjengaar hauls Vålerenga level
Vålerenga did not fold. Dennis Gjengaar pulled one back in the 59th minute with an assist from Magnus Westergaard. Six minutes later he struck again, set up by Håvard Nielsen, and the visitors had levelled at 2-2.
For a spell the momentum was with the visitors, and the tie looked to be heading toward a tense finish. Sarpsborg had to respond quickly.
Karlsbakk delivers the winner
The response came in the 69th minute. Daniel Seland Karlsbakk found the net after a pass from Sondre Sørli, and it proved to be the decisive goal. Sarpsborg held on for a 3-2 victory in front of the home support.
The tie was refereed by Mohammad Usman Aslam. Sarpsborg Stadion, which has a capacity of 8,022, hosted the match.
The two sides know each other well this season. They drew 2-2 in the league at Sarpsborg Stadion on September 6, and Vålerenga won 3-2 when they met in May. This time Sarpsborg came out on top in a five-goal contest.
A busy week at the stadium
The cup win comes only three days after Sarpsborg beat Aalesund 2-1 in the league. That result and this one give the home side two wins in a row at Sarpsborg Stadion. It was also a quick turnaround after a 3-0 league defeat to Rosenborg on October 18.
In the Eliteserien, Sarpsborg 08 are seventh with 31 points from 24 matches. They are one point clear of KFUM Oslo in eighth.
The next home fixture follows quickly. Sarpsborg host Kristiansund BK on Sunday, November 1, with kick-off at 17:00. The visitors are 15th with 20 points.
