Narrow Home Defeat as Sarpsborg 08 Fall 1–2 to Sandefjord
Sarpsborg 08 FF returned to Sarpsborg Stadion after a month away only to suffer a 1–2 defeat against Sandefjord in Eliteserien Round 18. The loss is their second in a row, following a 2–1 reverse at Viking, but three consecutive home fixtures now offer the chance for an immediate response.
A Long Wait Finally Over
Sarpsborg Stadion roared back to life on Sunday 16 August as Sarpsborg 08 FF returned to their home ground for the first time since July to face Sandefjord Fotball in Round 18 of the Eliteserien. Kick-off was scheduled for 17:00, and a hungry home support filled the terraces after weeks without a home fixture.
The wait, unfortunately, did not deliver the result the faithful had hoped for. Sarpsborg 08 fell to a narrow 1–2 defeat against Sandefjord, a result that leaves the club ninth in the Eliteserien standings with 22 points from 17 matches.
Pressure Mounts After Back-to-Back Defeats
The loss to Sandefjord followed a 2–1 away defeat at table-topping Viking FK at Lyse Arena on 8 August, meaning Sarpsborg 08 have now dropped six points across two successive matches. With Viking sitting at the summit of the division, the contrast in fortunes could not be starker.
For a squad that had recorded four wins, two draws and just one defeat in their previous seven home outings this season — averaging over 5,500 supporters per game at Sarpsborg Stadion — Sunday's home reverse will sting. The team will be eager to bounce back quickly, and the schedule gives them every opportunity to do exactly that.
Three Weeks, Three Fixtures — The Biggest Home Spell of 2026
Despite the disappointment, the stadium calendar offers an immediate chance at redemption. Sarpsborg Stadion is entering its most intensive home period of the entire 2026 season, with two further fixtures to come in quick succession.
First up is a Norwegian Football Cup derby against local rivals Sparta Sarpsborg, pencilled in for 22–23 August — a fixture that always raises the atmosphere inside the ground. That is followed by a home Eliteserien clash against Vålerenga on 7 September, completing a three-game home run that the club has billed as the busiest and most exciting fortnight of the year at Sarpsborg Stadion.
Girls' Festival Adds Community Colour
Off the pitch, the stadium has even more in store. In partnership with Allidrettsdagen and Sarpsborg Idrettsråd, Sarpsborg 08 will host a girls' football festival at the stadium on Sunday 23 August — the day after the cup derby. The community event adds a celebratory, grassroots dimension to what is shaping up to be a landmark stretch of home football for the region.
